Volvo and Environment – Eco-logical Thinking

Ever since its inception in 1927, Volvo has been sensitive to its environment, conscious that if the industry is to be part of the problems, there is an obligation to participate in the solutions.
Whether on the factory floor, on the roads, the construction sites, the seas and the skies of the world, Volvo’s three core values – Quality, Safety and Environmental Care are all intertwined, and Volvo is dedicated to the quality of the air that we breathe, the safety of our surroundings, the protection of the environment.
Since 1990, the Volvo Environment Prize has been the pinnacle of achievement in the environmental world, the so-called, ‘Seventh Nobel Prize’, saluting those who make the most significant contribution to environmental care.
Having invested over US$3 million in the Volvo Environment Prize, Volvo also practices what it preaches, having engineered many groundbreaking environmental initiatives within its plants and encouraging employees to develop ‘green’ work practices.
Volvo is also determined to invest in those who will inherit the environment, the youth of the world, and that is the key rationale behind the UNEP-endorsed Volvo Adventure.
The most comprehensive environmental education programme in the world, the Volvo Adventure engages with thousands of youngsters worldwide, a plethora of projects each year demonstrating the passion of youth towards their environment.
Each year, 15 teams of national champions are invited to Göteborg to present their projects to their environmental peers and eminent adult environmentalists and the ambience is amazing, the results remarkable.
With almost US$20,000 in prize money, the developing world has led the way with India winning the first two Volvo Adventure awards, and South Africa are the reigning champions.
Encouraging excellence in the environment, engineering an environmental edge, it’s a matter of Eco-logical Thinking from Volvo.
