Volvo XC60 as the official car in the Tour of California

Well into his highly publicised comeback, seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong is just one of the cycling stars competing in the Amgen Tour of California and the all-new Volvo XC60 complete with standard City Safety will be supporting the race over each of the gruelling 750 miles of rugged terrain.
Volvo Cars North America is, for the first time taking part in the Amgen Tour of California, the Volvo XC60 the official car in the gruelling 750-mile long, nine-day non-stop cycle race.
The largest cycling event in America, the 2009 Amgen Tour of California is a Tour de France-style cycling road race that challenges the world’s top professional cycling teams to compete along a demanding, recently expanded, 750-mile course from Sacramento in the north to Escondido in the south of the so-called Sunshine State.
From February 14th – 22nd, 18 teams including the Astana Cycling Team led by the comeback kid Lance Armstrong will fight for supremacy along some of the toughest terrain in the sport for the famous yellow jersey, from the Prologue in Sacramento on St Valentine’s Day until the finishing line 750-miles and nine-days later in Escondido.
An estimated 12 million will line the route during America’s most important road race and nine Volvo XC60s will be on display at five of the stopovers with the emphasis on the award-winning City Safety.
“The Volvo XC60 is really the perfect vehicle for the active lifestyle of so many cyclists and enthusiasts,” said North Holbrook of Volvo Cars North America, adding, “It’s stylish, has a large cargo area and standard integrated roof rails for bike racks.”
Participants and spectators will be able to experience ‘the car that stops itself,’ the City Safety system a low-speed collision avoidance system designed to prevent or mitigate accidents below 19mph.
