Volvo World Match Play Championship – It’s a Date

The date for the first-ever Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín has been confirmed (subject to final confirmation of the European Tour) at Thursday 29th October - Sunday 1st November 2009.
A packed press conference of over 50 journalists, photographers and broadcasters heard per Ericsson, President & CEO of Volvo Event Management affirm the final dates for the 45th staging of the world’s longest-running and most prestigious event.
“We are delighted to report that the dates for the Volvo World Match Play Championship are now formalized and that the event will take place from Thursday 29th October - Sunday 1st November 2009.”
He explained the reasons for the change from the original September date, “Were twofold,” saying, “First, the initial date was found to clash with the US Tour Championship, which would have been detrimental to both events, whereas the new date ensures both major tournaments can be showcased.
“Secondly,” he continued, “Because the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final is staged the day after the Volvo World Match Play Championship on the same Finca Cortesín course, it was important to allow our club golfers to have as much time as possible to play local, regional and national finals before coming to Spain for the big occasion.”
With a prize fund of €3.25million and a champion’s cheque worth €750,000, the Volvo World Match Play Championship is expected to attract 16 of the top golfers in the world, including the winner of the 15th anniversary Volvo China Open in Beijing from 16th - 19th April 2009.
