Emma Villacieros, former President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, and a driving force behind the success of the Volvo Masters has been made an honorary Vice President of the European Tour for services to golf in Spain.
Emma Villacieros, President of the Real Federación Española de Golf between 1988 and 2008 has dedicated much of her life to popularising the game of golf in her native Spain, and for her efforts has been made an Honorary Life Vice President of The European Tour.
Paying tribute to Mrs Villacerios’s vision and leadership at an award ceremony in the Boardroom of European Tour Headquarters at the Wentworth Club, George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour said, “No-one has helped to develop the game in Spain. She has been an immense driving force over the years and a leader of the game in Spain.
“She was incredibly persuasive in convincing The Ryder Cup Board to award the event to Spain and a formidable ally to The European Tour.
Having presided over Spanish golf from 1988, the inaugural year of the Volvo Masters at Valderrama through to the 20th anniversary of the end-of-season showpiece two-decades-later, Emma Villacieros has also ensured a golden era of Spanish golf, first with Severiano Ballesteros, then José Maria Olazábal, current stars such as Miguel Angel Jiménez and Sergio García and now the future of golf in Spain with young stars like Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, Pablo Larrazábal and Alvaro Quiros.
Responding to the European Tour’s award, Mrs Villacieros commented, “We have worked so many years together, all of us [and] in 1969 I could see how The European Tour was going to grow and grow and grow and now we look around and we can see how much it has.
“This honour means a great deal to me and I feel very proud in my heart. Above all, this means friendship,” she concluded.
