Million Pound Martin Muses Matchplay
13/07/2009
The rising star of the European Tour, 24-year-old Martin Kaymer has banked a million pounds with back-to-back tournament wins in France and Scotland and a victory in the British Open would make his the first three-in-a-row winner since Seve Ballesteros in 1986.
So far, July 2009 has been quite a month for 24-year-old German star Martin Kaymer.
June had ended with disappointment as the European Tour’s rising star missed the cut in the defence of his International Open title and July did not bode well when blisters on his big toe almost caused him to withdraw from the French Open.
But a hole cut in his golf shoe relieved the problem and he went on to win €666,660 first prize for edging-out Lee Westwood in a sudden-death play-off near Paris.
Kaymer came to the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond in the form of his young life and won his second title in two weeks, adding €580,000 to take his earnings for July alone to a million pounds, and the month is not yet halfway through.
Refreshingly, titles mean more than money for the man from Dusseldorf, the youngster saying after his Scottish Open win, “I think if you are out there and play for money, then you are in the wrong job.”
And the good news for organizers of the Volvo World Match Play Championship is that the French and Scottish Open champion not only loves Spain but also enjoys matchplay golf.
The man who finished sixth and second in his only two Volvo Masters appearances says the Volvo World Match Play Championship is, “Another nice event [and] I love to go to Spain. Matchplay is something different which is always nice as we play strokeplay every week.
“I love playing matchplay, it’s one against one and it is something else,” added the man who is now second in the Race to Dubai Rankings and an unprecedented 11th on the Official World Golf Ranking.
