Casey Confirmed for Volvo World Match Play Championship
09/09/2009
Having been chasing a place in the inaugural Volvo World Match Play Championship all season, four big names have now qualified to play alongside Australian Scott Strange who has been able to relax all season since earning his place courtesy of his Volvo China Open victory and former champion Paul Casey is excited by the prospect of making it a double in the longest-running match play championship on the European Tour.
It has been a tortuous process, six months, 20-plus tournaments including all four ‘majors’ but now, 2006 champion Paul Casey is in the field for the all-new Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín, Spain from 29

Volvo China Open champion, Australian Scott Strange had been in a minority of one whilst the drama of the qualification process unfolded, but now, following the final ‘major’ of the season, 29-year-old Paul Casey has booked his place in the field for the €3.25million Spanish showpiece.
“I thoroughly enjoy match play and winning in 2006 was definitely one of my career highlights so I am delighted to qualify for this year’s Volvo World Match Play Championship,” said the Englishman, adding, “One thing I noticed when I won the World Match Play was the number of great players who made it their business to win the title at least twice. Seve Ballesteros, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Nick Faldo have all got their name on the Champions roster at least a couple of times so I will definitely be hoping to emulate them by winning again this year.”
Currently recovering from a rib injury, Casey continued, “The Volvo World Match Play Championship is shaping up to have a great field and it will be a huge boost to my confidence as well as my Race to Dubai Rankings to put in a strong performance.”
Having won the 2006 World Match Play Championship at Wentworth, Casey went on to win the PGA Championship over the same ‘Burma Road’ course this year, just weeks after losing-out to Australian Geoff Ogilvy in the WGC match play event near to his Arizona home in the USA.
And, having this year regained the Abu Dhabi title he won in 2007, and recorded his first PGA Tour win at the Shell Houston Open, number three in the world is the highest Paul Casey has ever ranked, a position certain to place him amongst the favourites for the first Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín, Spain from 29
